AISS’s Recent Research Paper on “Modalities of Conflict Resolution in Afghanistan”

On Thursday 6 September 2018 the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS); launched its recent research paper entitled “Modalities of Conflict Resolution in Afghanistan: A Negotiated Settlement Scenario” . The purpose of the current paper is to highlight different viewpoints on multiple perspectives on conflict, conflict resolution, and negotiations in Afghanistan.

At the event which was held for presenting the main findings of this research, Dr Yaqub Ibrahimi the author of the research said: “The current stalemate in which neither the Taliban nor the government can claim military victory, defines the conflict of Afghanistan today and the government’s efforts for bringing the Taliban to negotiations table require a simultaneous proactive military campaign on the battleground and a dynamic diplomacy in the region”.
Then, Ataurrahm Salim, the deputy of the High Peace Council, commended and appreciated the current research of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) and continued that this study is helpful for whom wants to know the peace process in Afghanistan and the challenges towards it. According to the findings of this research, one of the most important factors in the Taliban current war in Afghanistan is the presence of foreign troops. He reminded that before the presence of foreign troops, also Taliban were fighting against Afghan government and people. Mr Salim did accept the flaws and passive action of the council which were criticised at the research, but he mentioned that the activities of the High Peace Council need help of the people, civil society, government, region and International supports.

The last speaker of the panel was Dr Anwarulhaq Ahadi, head of Nawin Melli Party and the former Minister of Commerce and Finance, he commended the current research and described it as an academic work, but he added that the research needs to focus on the internal, regional and international factors more in depth and he said that it is needed that the specialist from different fields should study causes of the conflict and suggest solutions.
